  1. Do you know how well people can control their mates with the power of words? In fact, one can manipulate others only by using words. For instance, Aristotle stated that rhetoric is the art of speaking well to persuade or to please. Thus, rhetoric may be useful but in many cases, can also be dangerous. Unfortunately, the power of language in 1984 is omnipresent. As a result, the state in the novel goes through a form of manipulation and is constantly under control. Throughout the novel, George Orwell uses many rhetorical devices to control the population of Oceania. Before I demonstrate the consequences of the power of words in a society, we’ll see how it is done and how dangerous it can be.

First, let’s see how the power of language is used to control the society in the novel. In order to eliminate all political words that could be in disfavor to Big Brother, the government of Oceania, creates a new language called ‘’Newspeak’’. Specifically, this new language is to eliminate all shades of meaning from words. For example, the word ‘’bad’’ would lead one to think negatively and one could be against Big Brother. In other words, they would rather use the word ‘’ungood’’ instead.

Equally important, the irony in the novel is also present. Every Ministry is the opposite of itself. For instance, the Ministry of Love represents hatred and does not allow Winston Smith and Julia their love, the Ministry of Truth is full of lies in the media and the Ministry of Peace is all about war. The Ministry of Trust is so ironic that it even promotes to not trust our own family, which is supposed to be a natural bond. Besides, they also suffer from brainwashing similar to marketing in modern society. In the novel, the popular brand is called ‘’Victory’’ but ironically, it is low quality products. In following quote, we can clearly see how bad it really is: ‘’ He took a cigarette from a crumpled packet marked VICTORY CIGARETTES and incautiously held it upright, whereupon the tobacco fell out on to the floor.’’ Additionally, the gin branded VICTORY also has a signification. Accordingly to the novel, it symbolizes poverty and control of the outer party. Another interesting quote from the novel would be: ‘’War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strenght’’. The quote also refers to the ministries as stated earlier. People lived in some kind of war, but were not aware of it. Consequently, they were slaves in freedom and the only thing that kept them going on was ignorance (which is why ignorance IS strenght). It’s because the book is loaded with ironic contrasts and rhetoric that made the population of Oceania weak in power.

  2. Next, let’s examine with more depth the consequences of rhetoric on an individual, then as a whole. Because people are so under control in 1984, the lack of individuality existed. Hence, the society won’t ever be able to move on until freedom of thoughts is given. People could not think for themselves and needed a leader. As a result, an individualism society could never flourish. People were like robots programmed by their owner (In this case, Big Brother would be the owner) in order to function. Finally, an independent society can never develop because rhetoric has such a powerful effect on the society.

In summary, the power of words can be hazardous because of the ironic contrasts it creates and is the case in the 1984. Therefore, the society is to suffer the consequences. However, George Orwell’s ‘’Animal Farm’’ also suggests a lot of rhetoric and could resembles 1984 in many ways.
